Building a Movement through Collaboration and Collective Impact

The Columbus branch of the NAACP is on the verge of a reimagining, and it’s a transformation that has the potential to revolutionize all aspects of Black life in our city. This isn’t just about reimagining an organization; it’s about creating a movement. A movement rooted in the power of community, driven by humility, trust, and collaboration. It’s about each of us coming together and asking, "How can I contribute to the collective good?" because when we all give just a little, we can do so much.

At the heart of this new era is a revitalized organizational structure. Our committees will become the engines of change—think tanks and action vehicles—designed to harness the creativity, passion, and expertise of our community members. Each committee will serve not just as a group tasked with addressing a particular issue, but as a thriving community where people are inspired to contribute, collaborate, and grow.

The beauty of this structure lies in its adaptability and inclusiveness. We recognize that each issue affecting Black life in Columbus is multifaceted, which is why we will not hesitate to form subcommittees and tasks forces within and in addition to our existing committees when necessary. These subcommittees will allow us to dive deeper into specific challenges, ensuring that we approach every issue with the thoughtfulness and attention it deserves. The committees themselves will be spaces for brainstorming, strategizing, and—most importantly—creating and executive a plan geared towards making lasting impact.

What does this mean for you?

If you’ve ever wanted to make a difference, to be part of something bigger than yourself, now is the time. We’re calling on you to lend your talents, your voice, and your energy to this movement. Whether you can give an hour a month or several hours a week, your contribution will be invaluable. Our committees will be spaces of inclusion, where everyone has a role to play. You don’t need to be an expert to join (although we do need the experts to commit to community as well) —just someone who believes in the power of change and is willing to work towards it.

Imagine being part of a committee that sparks real change in education, health, criminal justice, or economic empowerment. Imagine being surrounded by a community of people who are not only committed to the cause but who make the work fun, who make it rewarding. We are building a culture where committees are more than just meetings—they are communities within the community. A place where you’ll find support, inspiration, and pride in being part of something greater.

Humility, Trust, and Collaboration

This vision for the Columbus NAACP is one that values humility. We are building a culture where servant leadership is at the core of everything we do. This is not about titles or recognition—it’s about rolling up our sleeves and working together to uplift our community. It’s about trusting one another, recognizing that each of us has something unique to contribute, and that our collective strength far exceeds the power of any one individual.

Committees as Think Tanks and Action Vehicles

We are reimagining the role of our committees as dynamic think tanks that both analyze the issues and create actionable solutions. These are not places for endless debates or theoretical discussions—they are action vehicles designed to make real, measurable impact in our community. Every committee member will have a voice, and every idea will be valued. And when it’s time to take action, we will do so with confidence, knowing that we are working together toward a common goal.

Fun, Pride, and Community

And here’s the best part—it’s going to be fun. Yes, the work is serious, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the journey. We deserve to be able to ground as we grind. We want you to feel pride in being a part of this movement, in knowing that your efforts are helping to build a stronger, more just Columbus. Our committees will be places where friendships are made, where laughter is shared, and where the bonds of community are strengthened.

Committees as Community

Ultimately, our committees will be more than just groups working toward change—they will be communities within our larger NAACP family. Communities where people come together with shared values and a shared vision for a better future. Communities where collaboration is the norm, where trust is earned, and where humility guides our work.

This is the future of the Columbus NAACP. A future where we are not just members, but active participants in a powerful movement. A future where we are not just watching history unfold, but making history together.

I invite you to join us. Join a committee. Be part of the team. Be part of the community. Together, we will build a movement that creates lasting, transformative change. This is our moment—let’s seize it.

In solidarity,

Sean Walton, Jr.

Candidate for President, Columbus NAACP
