In the stirring tapestry of our collective struggle, we find ourselves at a critical juncture, one that calls for both reflection and action. The Columbus NAACP (Branch 3177B) stands not merely as an organization, but as a testament to our shared legacy of resilience and determination. As we approach the branch election on November 20th, we must grasp this moment—not as passive observers, but as active participants in shaping our future.
The complexity of our present reality cannot be ignored. Yet, within this urgency lies the beauty of democracy, a space where our varied voices harmonize to forge a path toward justice and equality. Some are creating a false narrative of tension (rather than the overwhelmingly positive energy and momentum) between the manner in which this democratic process is being conducted and what those being contested describe as the cultural value of respecting your elders and never publicly challenging them.
Disagreement on approach should not fracture our unity; rather, it should be the crucible in which our visions are refined, much like John Lewis and Dr. King, whose divergent approaches to activism illuminated a shared purpose.
We must recognize that every voice matters. The very structure of the NAACP thrives on participation at all levels. When we allow the currents of apathy and division to undermine our foundational principles, we jeopardize the movement itself. Every role, no matter how seemingly small, contributes to the larger narrative of progress.
It is imperative that we foster an environment of accountability and ethical leadership, and that we fully support and protect those leaders who are attacked as they step up and answer the call to serve. In doing so, we honor those who fought tirelessly for our rights and ensure that their legacy is not diminished by our complacency. The call for personal engagement is urgent; our actions must reflect our commitment to one another and to the ideals we uphold.
We are in a position to nurture open dialogue, celebrating our differences while uniting under a common purpose. Together, let us rise, grounded in humility and resolve, educate ourselves to the open, fair, and ethical democratic process of this election, and grow the Columbus NAACP into a beacon of hope for all who yearn for justice. This is our moment. and we are seizing it, not as individuals, but as a united front for change.
In solidarity,
W. Kay Wilson
Candidate for 1st Vice-President, Columbus Branch of the NAACP
